Meet The Surgeon
Tomy Starck, M.D. Director of UltraVision Center and former Director of the Refractive Surgery Service at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), is recognized as a leader in cornea and refractive surgery as well as a renowned author and speaker.

Dr. Starck has authored more than twenty-five articles in peer-reviewed journals, 9 textbook chapters, and more than 85 presentations in the United States and internationally. He received the 1999 Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his scientific contributions to the ophthalmology field.

Dr. Starck received his undergraduate eduation and Medical Degree from the University of Valle in Colombia, S.A. He then was awarded a scholarship at the world-renowned refractive surgery center, Barraquer Clinic in Bogota. He received his Ophthalmology residency training under the direction of Dr. Jose Barraquer, "father" of refractive surgery as we know it today. Dr. Starck then continued his training in the United States, first as a Cornea fellow at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary-Harvard Medical School, and then for three additional years as resident in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He has been on the faculty of UTHSCSA since 1994 and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Starck has been involved in refractive surgery since 1985 with the original keratomileusis and with vision correction (LASIK, PRK) early on, having performed his first myopic LASIK in 1996 in the United States, and his first hyperopic LASIK in 1997 also in the United States. Since then several thousand patients have benefited from his expertise and knowledge.

Dr. Starck has been conducting research with prototypes on wavefront technology for the past five years even before it was available for commercial use. In recent years, this depth of knowledge on the subject is evident by multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Refractive Surgery and Journal of Cataract Surgery. This places Dr. Starck at the forefront of vision correction techniques and is committed to using the most advanced technology available. He is the first LASIK surgeon in south Texas to offer the Bausch & Lomb ZyoptixTM system for personalized laser vision correction in which clinical studies conducted by the FDA demonstrated 100% patient satisfaction.
